HCB 50th Anniversary Concert

The Huntsville Concert Band will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a concert in the Lee High School Auditorium on Sunday, March 16, at 3:00 PM.

Under the direction of Marsha Asquith, the Band will perform concert band classics by Ralph Vaughan Williams and William Schuman, a 2013 work by American composer Samuel Hazo, and transcriptions of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance Op. 46 No. 8 and the John Williams soundtrack to The Cowboy and the Girl, as well as a medley of classic songs as interpreted by Michael Bublé. Huntsville’s own Dr. Daniel Hornstein will be the featured euphonium soloist in Jean Baptiste Arban’s Fantasie, Theme and Variations on The Carnival of Venice.

There is no admission charge, and tickets are not required. A reception will follow in the auditorium lobby. 

This program has been made possible by a 2014 Arts & Cultural Grant funded by the City of Huntsville.

Panoply

The Huntsville Concert Band will perform at the 32nd Panoply Arts Festival on Friday, April 25, from 6:45 to 7:30 PM on the Valley Jubilee Stage.

Under the direction of Marsha Asquith, the Band will perform a variety of music for concert band, including medleys of familiar tunes composed by John Williams and sung by Michael Bublé, marches from England and Germany, Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance No. 8 and Rimsky-Korsakoff’s Procession of the Nobles, and a 2012 work by American composer Richard L. Saucedo — and for everyone who saw Saving Mr. Banks, highlights from the original Mary Poppins movie! 

The Panoply Arts Festival is a production of The Arts Council.

“The Huntsville Concert Band is coming to Sci-Quest’s Spooktacular Science Family Halloween Party! The Band will play a Hauntcert of spooky sounds to get you in the Halloween spirit. 

Come to Sci-Quest before the Hauntcert and try your hand at making your own musical instruments. Then bring them to the Hauntcert and play along with the Band! After the concert, the musicians will show you how their instruments work. We will even have some instruments for you to try.”

The Huntsville Concert Band, under the direction of Marsha Asquith, and the U.S. Army Materiel Command Concert Band, under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer Four Jesse O. Pascua, will present a joint concert on Saturday, November 8, at 7:30 PM, in the Thurber Arts Center of Randolph School’s Garth Campus, 4915 Garth Road, Huntsville 35802. The Bands will perform a variety of selections for all ages and musical tastes, from marches to medleys, Gustav Holst to Morton Gould, and Spider-Man to Celtic Woman. There is no admission charge, and no tickets are required.

August 24 – Latham Methodist Church – Sue Urban’s Birthday Celebration and HCB mini concert.

Birthday bash kickoff is 2:00. After a few words by friends of Sue, the band will play for 30 minutes. After that time band members can party with Sue. 

September 1st – Scottsboro’s Arts in the Park – Caldwell Park 

The band is to show up at 2:30 and begin playing an hour-long concert at 3:00.

HCB was honored again this year to be invited to perform at Santa’s Village. However, this venue does not facilitate a full concert band, so we have formed two ensembles: a Woodwind Ensemble and a Brass Ensemble to perform traditional Christmas music respectively.

Performance Dates: Saturday, December the 14th and Wednesday the 18th.
